Sometimes I get so comfy in America…
That I forget how DIFFERENT it is from home. And then things get ugly.
For instance, today, a Chicagoan informed me, in the most blazé tone, that shootings in Chicago had spiked due to a spell of warm weather. Then she reacted like I was a moron when I looked bewildered.
“Well, more people are OUTSIDE, so more people get SHOT.” She said. (duh?)
Then she was not impressed when I explained that while that part technically makes sense, the phenomenon whereby enough people have guns that it’s average and commonly known that shootings to spike in heat waves is just not what we’re used to in Canada, ergo, disorientation, surprise.
I don’t think her stance was even pro-gun. She was just anti-not-thinking-shootings-are-an-eye-rolling-daily-occurence.
