You can contract behaviour? I didn’t even know it was contagious!

Finally, an RWA Student Bulletin worth culling for highlights again! The energy! The spirit! The punctuation! It’s been too long.

For new readers who might not be familiar with this feature, let me just explain quickly that I like to occasionally read the daily bulletin from my high school and then report back on my findings. Why? Because of the dramatic tension!

  • How every little change from when I was there exposes how some things never change at all.
  • How the exact character of the school is expressed through its devotion to extra-curricular activities, but the palpable frustration of teachers and apathy of students (particularly towards the trivialities of meeting attendance and returning forms on time) underscores the universal similarity of all high schools everywhere.
  • How you can feel the agony of the student who lost that duct tape wallet, and the resignation of the teacher who must hang on to it until someone claims it.
  • The earnest attempt to make everything sound exciting, contrasted with the fact that it’s… the… bulletin.

And of course, when you’re writing about high schoolers, anything you can do to bump yourself back into that mind frame of actually being in high school helps.

I’m finding this one, October 18, 2007 particularly reminds me of being slumped in a chair at 8am, rolling my eyes and scribbling in my sketchbook.

BLACK LIGHT

Dance: Friday, Oct. 19th, 2007
Tickets: Foyer @ lunch J. Zigby 10/19

I will leave you now with two questions and one bit of rambling nostalgia:

  1. Who else anticipates / really wants to see A Bunch of People vs. No Names default on that touch football final?
  2. Should attendance at the lighting meeting have spoken volumes, or should it have glared like a beacon?

Rambling: (but this is a good anecdote… a classic)
That Biology Trip item reminds me of the time my friends went on what is probably the very same biology trip (I didn’t go. I didn’t take biology after grade 9.) and some kids were (parents, cover your ears) drinking on the biology trip, and got caught because they hid the bottles behind the curtains in their room, which meant they were visible from the street. (Further evidence that drinking != clever.)

Even though my friends weren’t among those drinkers, they had to take notes home to their parents explaining that while they might not have been drinking, someone else was!

And instead of being shocked, their parents were just like, “Um, so you weren’t drinking? So we have nothing to discuss? So why do I have to sign this?”

And I think they may have even laughed about it.

And that, my friends, is why I love to read the bulletin.
