I’m just going to keep doing this once a month until one of us gets bored, or something by the Magnetic Fields finally comes up, ‘k?
(Single girl, I know you are reading and I know this is not the kind of post you’ were hoping for, but since I also know you have a Nano now, perhaps you can play along.)
Poison, Bel Biv Devoe, who really cares what album
I thought it might be fun to surround myself with the sounds of early high school. (Grade 7 for me, ’cause I’m from Quebec) But I don’t actually like this song at all. I think it’s the sound of the chorus that keeps us thinking it’s actually cool. ‘Cause that part maybe is.
Original Sins, Chris Bowden, Off the Ninja Tune Xen Cuts compilation of oh so many years ago now.
This one’s interesting because Chris Bowden is interesting. He’s like the Keith Richards of sax when he plays with The Herbaliser, and here he is producing his own layered, soulful stuff. Talented mess of a genius kind of a guy.
Hoobale, Kanaan, The Dusty Foot Philosopher…
…is one of those albums I like less and less the more I play it. When I first heard it, I thought it was really fresh and original, and it was neat to hear an MC talk about real African issues over real African rhythms. Some of that is still kind of true, and as I write now, I find it hard to articulate what irks me about it, other than the actual sound of his voice, but suffice it to say, I skip right over these tracks whenever they pop up.
Blue Dress, Depeche Mode, Violator
This is like the opposite of the Kanaan problem. I bought this album but I haven’t listened to it very often. (I’m not sure I’ve ever paid attention to this song before.) No real reason why. Sometimes that just happens. But it’s a good album. It’s most notable in my collection for the day my former roommate’s jackass boyfriend picked it up and said, with total disgust, “Depeche Mode? Who listens to Depeche Mode?”
“Me.” I simply said, ’cause I was a little startled.
I would react differently now.
Landstander Theme, Brendan Small, from the bonus CD that came with Season 4 of Home Movies on DVD.
Yes! There are like 60 of these tracks, and I was so hoping they would pop up. This is not as exciting as if it was Jazz Fight (”You mean a battle of wits?” “Close. We fight with Jazz”), or Jason’s Theme, or any of the tracks called Crazy Legs, or if the They Might Be Giants songs from the Performing Arts Camp episode were on here. This one’s just a chill rock instrumental, but it’ll do.
OK, now it’s your turn again. Give your collection a spin again and tell me what comes up again. First 5 random tracks. No editing or other cheating. Go! Again.

1. Stan by Eminem … This was the first song by eminem where I didn’t think what an asshole, now I can listen to Superman and appreciate him, oh how far I have come.
2. Cold Discovery by Smog … have to be honest don’t know this song roomie’s boyfriend gave us a bunch of music and I am still getting to know some of it
3. Dirty Little Mouth by Fluke … this is from the Playing by Heart soundtrack, which was one of my favourite movies in my early twentys. Total techno, but I like it.
4. Fields of Gold by Sting … I like this song … what can I say.
5. Missing byt Everything but the Girl (Todd Terry Tee’s Piece)… Roomie has a cd sinlge of this song with 6 different DJ’s doing the song. I like the song but I think I need to get rid of one or two of the verisions.
Thanks for playing random again, I was just thinking the other day that I could go back to that post from last month and play, but that would be lame.

uh, i’m assembling binders in the ass’t deputy’s boardroom, wiggling my pale ass to:
1. some deep house mix cd. noteworthy only for fertile ground and llorca.
2. sepultura, nation. i may not be able to get away with this one. probably too much jello biafra.
3. bakunin’s bum, fight to win (ocap benefit cd). i’m definitely not going to be able to get away with this one. way too much provincial govt criticism.
4. carl craig, the workout. we’re in two boardrooms, actually, me and a colleague, putting together these binders. he’s got the cbc on - it’s like a rave with a house/techno room and a classical room, except we’re working.
5. lal, warm belly high power. rose’s voice may piss off my colleagues when they come around to help out but i haven’t listened to this in a while.
sadly, no magnetic fields. i have the 69 love songs sampler (oh, radio station freebies, i miss thee) but i never think to bring it to work. probably too depressing.

1. Pregonera, Tango Five with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker (Symphonic Tango Night) - A delightful light-hearted tango from a tango-meets-symphony album by a german tango-meets-jazz ensemble. Not my favourite from the album, but pretty good all the same.
2. Too Sick to Pray, A3 aka Alabama 3 everywhere outside North America (Gone in 60 Seconds Soundtrack) - Don’t call a doctor, I’m gonna get better… from the group behind the Sopranos theme song. You’ve probably heard this one once or twice…
3 Jump, Aztec Camera (Knife) - A slow-paced, acoustic cover of the Van Halen song - a donation to my collection of covers from my dear cousin Emily.
4. boom boom, pepe & the bottle blondes (late night betty) - Well, you were there for this one… There really is no place like the Jazz Fest to find incredible music for my iTunes library.
5. First Lesson: Genesis 3, King’s College Choir (A Festival of Lessons and Carols) - I knew Christmas would show up eventually! The story of Adam & Eve and the apple. Even if you don’t like Christmas music, the opening voice, so simple and clear, in Once in Royal David’s City makes this album totally worth it.
Still no Compulsory Ice Dance music… or muppets. Weird.

Violater is one of the only redeeming things from the late 80’s. It’s a GREAT album, as far as production goes. And considering how forgettable the next couple of albums were, it marks the jumping off point for me and DM. I never really could pay too much attention to them after this album. And Blue Dress is an underrated Martin Gore track!

Hey Jill, want more DM? Martin is a big fan, and knowing this, when I gave him the ipod, Simon got EVERY song ever done by them (Beck, the pixies and the beatles too) and put them on DVD’s for us…. Every one. Even the live at the BBC ones. I do listen to more DM now.
