Let this be my epitaph
“You think you can triumph in this world with nothing more than a keen mind, a pile of books, and the occasional gourmet meal.”
- Count Olaf, to the Beaudelaire Orphans, at the end of The End of A Series of Unfortunate Events
Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) never, ever, ever lets me down, and this little gift of a sentence– planted at the very end of a 13 book series, as if to remind me exactly why I read them all– is no exception.
I do think that. It has demonstrably been the overriding thesis of my life so far. And now, thanks to this man who is easily, hands down, without contest, my favourite person I’ve never met, I have the quote and the page number (314) to tuck away in my bibliography and back myself up.
Thank you Mr. Handler, for the books and the music and the occasional periodical articles (as opposed to periodic & occasional articles). I’m off to the video store now to see if I can unearth a copy of Rick.

i’d add records [as in a pile of books and records] but that’s just me.
