Ron, I feel the same way

Advertising worth scowling over

What I imagine is going through Ron Sexmith’s toussled head every time I see these posters:

“Mehrrr… I hate having a music career that pays me to be in ads. I don’t like having my pitcure taken… why do I have to do this? Stop looking at me! It’s not ABOUT this. It’s about the MYOOOSIC. How about I just kill myself? Will that make you buy a damn pumpkin spice latte and pick up a compilation CD of Canadian music on your way out? This shirt is scratchy. Can I gooo now?”

I like that The Second Cup wants to do anything with Canadian music but this campaign is kind of weird because first of all, their attempt to align themselves with music seems like a lame and futile attempt to hone in on the market Starbucks already dominates. And then this poster looks like it would be part of a big campaign with lots of different artists, but in fact, there are no others. That means that this scowling face of Ron Sexmith is the face of the entire campaign, and of Canadian music for the purposes of this campaign. What, I ask you, does that say about where any of this is going?

*GASP* You’ve hurt Ron’s feelings! The good news is that he’s going to write a song about it…

…the bad news is he’s going to write an album about it.

Sigh.

Too funny. I hope this wouldn’t actually hurt Ron’s feelings.

I really believe he doesn’t want to be in pictures.

Well, considering he sort of resembles the folk rock version of fatty arbuckle, he’s not the only one!
BA-DOOM-CHING

It’s a joke Ron, put down the pills…

After reading this, I had a strong urge for pumpkin spice lattes. So I went out and bought one.

Wow. This cranky thing really does work. Maybe Second Cup should corporately sponsor ME. This blog moves product, yo.

So you can get the pumpkin spice latte with soy milk? I’m kind of surprised it’s not just a pre-mixed modified milk product powder deal.
