I haven’t really been sitting around the house taking showers all day, although it does sometimes feel that way.
- I’ve been picking away at the novel. It’s at a picky stage right now. Draft #2. Need to find all the good needles in the big bad haystack of draft #1. Such is novelising.
One of the more fun aspects of draft #2 has been strolling around Parkdale, sometimes with La S., who can like, talk to people and stuff, which gets us into much funner places than I do alone– places like Parkdale Collegiate Institute, the high school where everybody gets along, most people are Nepalese, and no one worries about violence, if the one teacher we spoke to is to be believed.
- I’ve had a few meetings to attend, having to do with the destruction of the building I live in, its reconstruction as something people might one day agree on, and the hopeful non-ruin of the neighborhood. Fun times.
It has me contemplating questions like how do you fit a 3 bedroom apartment into a 900 square foot space? Maybe if I find some time I’ll model it in SketchUp and see if there’s room in there for both people and the same people, turning around.
- I’ve been spending a lot of time under my geek helmet, getting a new web site together for the delightful rapper, More Or Les, whose new album, The Truth About Rap launches at the end of next month. The new site is built in WordPress, but somehow all that easy-peasy, templated, just-turn-this-on-and-plug-this-in technology just makes me want to add more crazy (and often invisible to the outside eye) stuff to it, and then customize it, so it doesn’t really save ME any time. Les will be able to do amazing things with it, however, which is the important part.
- Most excitingly, I get to do site maintenance on this web site soon! Joy of joys, it’s the, er, joy, of being in business long enough that things start to break. As Borat might say, “Yes! Success!”
The changes I’m making will, again, not be visible to the naked human eye, unless I fork them up completely. That means there’s basically no payout for you, if you’re even still reading this. (I would have stopped at “geek helmet.”)
And for me? Well, in the next few days, I’ll have the honour of migrating my database, upgrading my backend and switching hosting companies at the same time! What’s that like in non-geek? Imagine having a root-canal performed in a moving vehicle. And since I’m the technician in this example, you might as well imagine that the procedure stars the cast of Jackass as the endodontist. Please bear with me if the anaesthetic wears off early or I somehow manage to lose a sponge in there while I’m working.
- What else? I have been sincerely enjoying the weekly delivery of organic produce from Green Earth Organics. Every week, fresh surprises arrive in a Rubbermaid bin, some of them minty, many of them mangoes. This week, for instance, the “fresh basil” was so fresh, it came potted! Damn. Now I have the responsibility of keeping it alive. I, who cannot keep even a cactus in health. I’m going to have to root around and find a geek thumb to go with my geek helment.
Green Earth delivers in Toronto and Vancouver. If you try it out, tell ‘em I sent you.
