The Nerve!
Tonight I did something I’ve never done before: I went into the legendary Starbucks across the street.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m fairly Starbucks-ambivalent. But tonight I had that headache that gets whatever it wants and the short soy latte from Starbucks fulfils one very specific medicinal need, and dammit if I wasn’t feeling needy.
Since this was my first time out to any Starbucks with my trusty new-old iBook, this gave me the opportunity to learn, for the first time, that wireless access in Starbucks is not free. I repeat, no free Internet access in Starbucks! They have some lame deal with the major carriers where you can enjoy the convenience of reading your email in Starbucks in return for the pleasure being billed through your cel plan. Joy!
And all of this, just a block away from no fewer than three coffee shops with totally free access, that even serve coffee in re-usable coffee serving aparati, AKA, mugs or in some cases, trendy-like, DIY-style, wrap-a-napkin-’round-that-so-you-don’t-get-scalded glasses.
No free internet. No reusing or recycling. High prices. Exactly one beverage that is enjoyable. I feel compelled to point this out: slandering, spray painting or boycotting this Starbucks is totally unnecessary. There’s already no reason to go there.
