Things we unearthed while gutting what’s going to become Maehem’s new dance studio.

MaeHem is going to be opening a street dance studio, and she has scored herself the best location ever, right at the corner of Queen & Spadina. As Ted Dancin’ aptly pointed out, this is not only the best possible intersection in Toronto to locate such a studio, but possibly the best location in all of Canada. One would have to leave the country to top this particular corner. My mind boggles at the mere thought, not to mention the distracting view of the intersection and all the people-watching it affords.

I really, really, really want this studio to succeed like no studio has succeeded before, so the Delightful Rapper and I, along with a good chunk of our happy little extended urban family of MaeHem devotees (including 2/3 of the unusually tired and sore NFA DJ lineup) spent Saturday demolishing the club that used to occupy the space, which made for some excellent destruction therapy.

I got to use power tools; I ran errands to the hardware store; I dismantled things with mallets; I stood around in a dumpster, waist-deep in drywall; I snapped screws in half, using only my gloved hands and the power of leverage. It was fun, and I was less sore the next day than I thought I would be.

Here is a sampling of the random objects we found amongst the debris.

  • ’bout $6 in change
  • flyers for trance club nights
  • Gypsy Kings cd
  • volunteer contract for the OM festival
  • small vial of crack crystals

It was a haul that perhaps added to the validity of the current ban on the creation of new nightclubs in the area. “Why not make a dance studio instead?” our piles of drywall and club shrapnel seemed to be begging.

I mean, seriously, no one should be encouraged to listen to the Gypsy Kings.
