Exercising Rights

I’m just back from my daily constitutional right to vote. The voting is done. I’ve been for my walk. It took about 30 seconds from end to end. I am refreshed. This hassle-free voting thing is undoubtedly one of the benefits of working from home. Mailing in a ballot would have been more work, and not half as cardiovascularly rewarding.

It’s a beautiful, sunny day in Toronto. Toronto doesn’t really get too many of those. We have a lot of temperate grey days and smoggy sunny days but days like today where everyone smiles and the birds sing like they mean it are few and far between.

It doesn’t take much at all to make Toronto believe summer is coming. Any sign of unseasonal warmth coupled with sun is enough to do it. Today, a Monday in late January, at 3 degrees Celcius (37.4 Farenheit), people are voting in shorts. There is a barbeque being set up at the far end of my building. I’m sure that on College, where there are patio bars, people are eating outside with their coats on, trying to pretend it’s warm and they’re lovin’ it. I’ve done it too. I’ve rollerbladed in short sleeves in many a February. It’s just one of the ways we’ve devised for getting through the long boringish winter.
